Salt air and bathroom fixtures — why your coastal home eats hardware faster than you think

2026-08-21

If your house is located near the coast, you may have noticed that the durability of metal products in coastal areas is much lower than in inland areas. Door hinges will rust, cabinet handles will become dull, and the bathroom - the most humid room in the house - is the most severely affected. The problem is not only about moisture, but also about the salt brought by the sea wind, which corrodes bathroom hardware much more severely than most people imagine.

The salt particles brought by the sea wind will continuously deposit on various surfaces - you can't see them, but they do exist. The steam from showers forms a salty and salty film on faucets, shower heads, and towel racks every day. This film will corrode the chrome layer and penetrate tiny scratches. Once it enters, the coating will start to bubble and flake off. The metal base oxidizes and becomes rough and green. This not only looks ugly, but also weakens the connection strength over time.

Pure Brass: A Clear Advantage

Pure brass is a clear advantage here. Brass does not rust as easily as steel - it may oxidize and form a deeper surface color layer, but this is only a surface change and not structural damage. Solid brass faucets with high-quality PVD coating can be used for many years in coastal environments without corrosion or flaking. PVD technology firmly combines the coating at the molecular level, so salt cannot penetrate the coating interior, which is different from ordinary electroplating processes.

316 Stainless Steel: The Second Good Choice

316 stainless steel is the second good choice. It contains molybdenum, which can effectively resist the erosion of chlorides - and salt is essentially a chloride. Ordinary 304 stainless steel works well in inland areas, but eventually local rust will occur in coastal areas. 304 and 316 have a small price difference, so if you live near the sea, it is recommended to choose 316 stainless steel.

Regular Maintenance is Still Necessary

Even with the use of suitable materials, regular maintenance is still necessary. Wipe the faucet with a damp cloth once or twice a week to remove the salt film before it forms. That's all - no special cleaners are needed, just water and a soft cloth. It may sound too simple and insignificant, but those who insist on regular maintenance will have faucets that remain as new years later, while their neighbors have to replace the rusted faucets every two seasons. Simple maintenance seems simple, but it brings huge returns.
